Need for Speed 3 (PC) Preview

Background Info

Electronic Arts' Need For Speed series has allowed gamers to drive some of the world's hottest cars at break-neck speeds. The latest in the series, Need for Speed 3 continues this tradition and offers new cars, better graphics, and more options than ever before.

Preview
As with the previous releases in the series, NFS3 offers the chance to drive some exotic machinery over some equally exotic (and treacherous) roads. This time around, however, EA has enhanced the gameplay by throwing in a few surprises.

The alpha version used for this preview wasn't quite ready for release, but you'd never know it; everything from installation to the title and menu screen looks very polished. The interface is as intuitive and simple as they come. Sound and graphics options are plentiful, and NFS3 offers both Direct3d and Glide support. NFS3 offers either single or multiplayer options in all game modes. There are also plans for a free multiplayer service, offering support for up to 8 players. Two players can compete via modem or serial connection.

The gameplay itself looks very promising, especially for the arcade racing fan. The tracks are challenging and very well-rendered, with details like fast-food eateries and gas stations along the side of the road. Weather conditions are represented as well, with fog, rain, snow and wind-blown leafs providing an immersive and believable environment.

The biggest attraction of the NFS series is undoubtedly the cars; vitually everyone dreams of flying down the road in a Ferrari or Aston-Martin, and NFS3 provides that opportunity. The cars look very nice and are accurate in appearance. The handling seems better than in previous versions of the NFS series.

New to the NFS series is the Hot Pursuit option. In this mode you can choose to be either a police officer or a speeding motorist, and well, you can guess what the goal is here..Very fun!

Overall, it looks like NFS3 will continue the tradition of providing a fun and challenging arcade driving experience. With the release date drawing near, it looks like EA has produced another high-octane winner.
