NBA LIVE 2003 SHOWCASES NEW EA SPORTS™ FREESTYLE CONTROL
EA SPORTS™ is ramping up for a new basketball season with the latest version of its outstanding pro-hoops game, NBA LIVE 2003. This year, LIVE promises to be better than ever, thanks in part to gameplay improvements such as a more intuitive AI, slicker motion-captured animations and on-line play. However, EA has gone the distance to ensure it delivers the most realistic basketball sim on any system with the advent of the EA SPORTS™ Freestyle Control. Using the Freestyle Control, gamers will be able to feel like they truly are part of the action.
The Freestyle Control is more than a simple upgrade. Instead of mapping a few extra player moves and dekes to the left and right trigger buttons, EA SPORTS is revolutionizing player control by utilizing the right-analog stick. The Freestyle Control employs the use of the stick to enable users to perform an exhaustive amount of special moves on offense like crossover dribbles, spin moves, drop steps and shoulder fakes, and on defense, like facing the shooter, raising the player’s arms to block a shot and stealing the ball.
Aside from basic player control, which is still designated to the left-analog stick, every other move in the game is tied to the right-analog stick. Furthermore, you can now combo moves in succession a lot more smoothly. The way these moves are performed depends on how the user manipulates the analog sticks, what the player’s body motion is and which hand the ball is in. For example, if a player is standing still, dribbling the ball in his right hand with both analog sticks on the controller starting in the neutral position, the user can perform a cradle move by pressing the right-analog stick to the right. As the player performs the cradle move, the user can combo into a behind-the-back crossover by pressing the right-analog stick Down and Left. Of course, there are more than 100 offensive-based combos alone in NBA LIVE 2003, but all work on the basic premise demonstrated above.
On defense, EA also incorporated all the basic moves, which used to only be available while pressing the main action buttons on the controller, onto the right-analog stick. In LIVE 2003, users will be able to steal, sidestep and face-up an offensive opponent using the right analog stick. Furthermore, defenders can contest a shot by merely raising their arms, performed with the left stick in the neutral position and pressing the right analog stick Up. This makes it so you can make it difficult for the opposing player to get off a shot without having to jump and give up your position.
Overall, the Freestyle Control adds a level of realism and individual expression not experienced before in a basketball sim. Once users are comfortable with this advanced control scheme, performing moves will definitely seem more intuitive and more natural. Simply put, the right-analog stick enables users to execute moves without even thinking about them, creating an unbelievably realistic flow to each contest. Now more than ever, “If it’s in the game, it’s in the game.”
