Mad Catz Xbox Premium Controller Review
Mad Catz, makers of videogame accessories for all the latest platforms recently released a new Xbox Premium Controller. Priced at $29.99, Mad Catz's controller is 10 bucks cheaper than Xbox's official controller. Mad Catz definitely beats Microsoft's controller when it comes to price, but does it give you the same performance?
Instantly, I noticed some major differences between Microsoft's and Mad Catz's Xbox controllers. The Mad Catz's Xbox Premium Controller has rubberized grips on the left and right side of the controller. The grip really helps in improving the comfort of your hands.

In addition, the Xbox Premium Controller is a little bit smaller than the Microsoft controller. This made it easier for me to reach the buttons. Microsoft's controller seem to be designed for people with pretty big hands. Mad Catz's smaller design helps a great deal. Another positive in purchasing the Xbox Premium Controller would be the button layout of A, B, X, Y. These buttons are much more accessible with the smaller button size. The placement of the buttons due to the smaller buttons are also arranged differently as seen below.

The D-pad of the Xbox Premium Controller by Mad Catz is also another difference. This controller has four little grooves in the D-pad to help with the distinction of the four primary directions. The Microsoft controller's D-pad is more of a circular D-pad with no absolute right, left, up or down.

However, with some of these nice differences from the Microsoft controller, there is one major gripe. The buttons on the controller need to be pressed all the way down for the Xbox to recognize it. This really affects games that are button-sensitive, such as Tony Hawk 2x or Madden 2002. In other games such as NFL Fever 2002 and SSX Tricky, the fact that the button needs to be pressed completely down gets annoying as well.
Overall, would I recommend this controller to someone over the Microsoft controller? Well, Mad Catz's Xbox Premium Controller sells for $29.99 while the Microsoft controller sells for $39.99. I can't wholly recommend the Mad Catz's Xbox Premium Controller due to the button's lack of recognizing sensitivity. However, if you can overlook that fault, you should be satisfied with the smaller size of the controller, the comfortability of the controller and the price of the controller when compared against Microsoft's controller.
