Mike Franco InterviewJames of SGN recently did an interview with Mike Franco, who is the producer and designer of the new Jack Nicholas game. He took time off his busy schedule to share some of his answers with James.
James: How long have you been into golf? Are there any other sports that interest
you as much as golf? Mike: I first started playing real golf back in 1972 when I was 12 years old. A
local school teacher named Butch Breeden was a former pro, and his support
helped many local kids learn golf. I grew up in the Santa Barbara, CA area
and that community had a very good junior golf program. I played in weekly
tournaments every summer and played for my high school team as well. I
played college golf, but by that time I was pretty burnt out. I also played
sand volleyball, basketball, racquetball, among other interests, and at the
time, these sports were much more interesting than golf was. About five
years ago, I met my future wife, and she asked me to teach her to play golf.
This is what renewed my interest in golf. The first computer golf game I
played was Mean 18, so for a time, I played computer golf instead of real
golf. Today, my handicap fluctuates between 5 and 6; I lose most of my
strokes on the putting green. I probably own about 20 or 30 putters that
were all candidates to help me fix this problem, but deep down I know it's
me, not the equipment.
James: How long have your team been working on JN6? How far along is the next golf
game? Mike: I had been working on the next Jack Nicklaus game (it will probably be
called Golden Bear Challenge) since Accolade shipped Jack 5 (November 1997).
Hypnos Entertainment had been working on Jack Nicklaus Online Tour since
Spring 1997. The move of Jack from Accolade to Activision was consummated in
April of this year, and that is when I joined Hypnos and work formally began
on the game. We have completed the game design and are writing code. There
isn't much that is visual yet, so we can't really put a percentage completed
onto the project yet. Basically, we are cranking full speed ahead, but it's very
early still. James: Have you or Activision come up with any names for the new game yet? Mike: Yes. It is tentatively titled "Jack Nicklaus Presents: Golden Bear
Challenge." © 1998-2006 Sports Gaming Network. Entire legal statement. Feedback
