NFL Blitz Interview
SGN: 5. What was the main reason in not including a season mode or a play editor in the PC version?
Mark/Sal:
The play editor was exclusive to the N64. Since they are allowing us to use a N64 card reader on Blitz '99 (In arcades now). The play editor is exclusive to the N64 since we are using the play editor card reader on the Blitz 99 arcade. Season mode and LAN support will be available shortly as a patch for the game. SGN: 6. How come users have to enter their initials after every single game? I don't think NBA Jam made users have to enter initials after every game. NBA Jam just continued the 'career mode'. Mark/Sal:
That's a good point and we will be correcting it on the upcoming version.
SGN: 7. Describe an average work day while working on NFL Blitz.
Mark/Sal:
We worked 7 days a week for the last 6 months of the project. 12 hour days were the norm. The team comprised of 5 programmers and 5 artists all worked incredibly hard. The day begins around 10AM, and usually ended around midnight. We would go out for food to get a little break. Lots of junk food. For the last month or so of the game, we would play the game, tweak percentages, and play the game some more. ALL games we played were for cash. : )
All of the motion capture acting was done by Sal. As development went on, and some of the moves proved to be cool, the artists would go back into the studio and get some more moves that they knew would work. This added much variety to the game. Simple changes to the percentaging of the game could ruin the game! One compile of the code and everyone would hate the game. There is a fine line in all of these sports games between having a horrible game and a great game.
SGN: 8. Will there be a sequel to NFL Blitz?
Mark/Sal:
Blitz '99 is out in arcades now, and will be available for N64, PlayStation and PC the middle of next year.
