WWF Royal Rumble (DC)
Hands-on Preview

Publisher: THQ
Release Date: Fall 2000

Screens(40)

> 1 Movie Available <

THQ was nice enough to send us a near-complete version of WWF Royal Rumble for the Dreamcast. Take a look at the 40 screen shots we took of the game. Don't worry, we have more screen shots on the way! We also captured a movie of the gameplay, which you can download by clicking on the link to the right.

Let me start off by saying WWF Royal Rumble is a pure arcade game, especially in the Royal Rumble mode, with 9 wrestlers in the ring getting tossed back and forth. In 1-on-1 matches, you get 3 guys, usually DX, jumping in the ring and attacking both wrestlers in the ring; that is, if you leave interference on. There are 21 total wrestlers, including one hidden one as of right now. THQ might add some more superstars if time permits. Let's just hope they do.

The game modes include versus match, exhibition , and Royal Rumble. People have been wondering if there is a cage match, and the answer is a yes, in a way. It isn't really a cage match as the cage is there for the appearance. It serves just like any other backstage.

The graphics in the game are just that damn good as HHH would put it. The game looks the most realistic of all the wrestling games out there. There aren't full entrances. However, after the screen showing who will be wrestling, the camera jumps inside the ring and the wrestlers do their trademark stances. Example, the Rock gets on the turnbuckle and does the People's Eye Brow, X-Pac jumps up and does the DX sign. THQ has promised the game would run at 60 frames a second. Boy, they were not kidding! The game runs smooth with no jerkiness.

WWF Royal Rumble seems to have good potential and if some of the kinks are worked out, the game could become a real fan favorite. It's true, it's true. Too bad the game won't have a career mode.

I will try to answer reader questions as time permits. So if anyone out there would like me to address something, please post a message on our forum in the wrestling category.
