WCW Mayhem (PSX) Preview
UPDATED: May 11, 1999 (Click here for an updated (8/21/99) fact sheet.)
EA Sports recently acquired the WCW license from THQ. Till now,
wrestling was the only major sports genre that EA has not been a part
of. Their lineup includes the acclaimed FIFA series (soccer), the ever-famous
Madden series (football), the only real basketball series, (NBA Live) to name a few.
Now, EA Sports will try to get into wrestling.
With the acquisition of the WCW license, it means that no matter how
bad or how good the game is, the game will sell. Wrestling has
taken the country by storm. Everywhere you go, you will see someone wearing
some sort of wrestling apparel. WCW Mayhem, the title of EA's first wrestling title, is expected to hit Playstations and Nintendo 64s sometime this fall.
"We are very excited to be working with the WCW to produce fresh and innovative wrestling titles," said Steve
Rechtschaffner, executive producer at Electronic Arts.
"Our goal is to bring the best sports entertainment for audiences of all
types to enjoy. Having the exclusive WCW license coupled with a highly talented development team will no doubt help ensure
that EA will be a major force in the wrestling game genre, just as we are in the other categories."
WCW Mayhem will offer game players a fast, action- and power-packed wrestling experience equal to that of the WCW house
matches and the widely popular televised events broadcast in over 50 countries worldwide through the TNT television
network.
The game will have more than 60 WCW wrestlers, along with their same signature
moves and stunts. A few of the wrestlers include: "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, Goldberg, Kevin "Big Sexy"
Nash, Diamond Dallas Page and Sting.
EA is reportedly saying the game will enable gamers to battle in the backstage area, locker/dressing rooms and garage areas, which is currently not available in any wrestling title out there. We will bring you more info as we get it.
There will be fifteen WCW rings, which will include the Nitro and Thunder ring as well as all 12 WCW Pay Per View rings. The game also will have a
momentum meter that will show who has the advantage. The crowd cheers or boos will coinside with the momentum.
The game will have facial animations and expressions. If EA makes good on their word, this game will be truly revolutionary.
WCW Mahyem will incorporate over 600 motion captured animations. Each wrestler will have a unique set of moves, including their finishing moves such as Goldberg's "Jackhammer" and
Nash's "Power Bomb".
Some of the guys doing commentary are Tony Schiasvone, Mike Tennay, Bobby Henan and Mean Gene Okurlund.
WCW Mayhem for both the PlayStation and N64(TM) is being developed by Kodiak Interactive Software Studios and will be
published by Electronic Arts worldwide this fall.
