Crave Entertainment announced it has obtained the license for The Ultimate Fighting Championship[R] (UFC) from SEG Sports Corp. marking the first time a videogame publisher has obtained the license for the popular mixed martial arts event.
"This exclusive license covers all game systems and allows us to push the envelope and actually form a new brand of fighting games," stated Holly Newman, Executive Vice President of Publishing. "This full-contact, mixed martial arts sport has proven to be eminently successful throughout the world. It has a huge fan base and now we can deliver the intense fighting of the UFC to gamers."
Crave Entertainment has acquired the UFC license from SEG Sports Corp. for 5 years and has agreed to do several games starting with the first worldwide releases for the PlayStation and Dreamcast in Q4 of 2000.
Robert B Meyrowitz, President and Chief Executive Officer of SEG Sports Corp., a division of Semaphore Entertainment Group, commented; "It is with great pride and excitement that we announce our relationship with Crave Entertainment. Over the past six years, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has become an international brand. We have had many people approach us with the idea of creating a game format for the UFC, and Crave was the perfect partner for us. We look forward to creating one of the greatest success stories in the world of videogames and to expanding the UFC's global reach, bringing the event to an even larger television audience worldwide."
The UFC consists of mixed martial arts competitions, based on established events, that have been taking place safely in Europe, Japan and South America for many years. In addition to reaching millions of homes in the U.S. on per-per-view, satellite and pay television, the competitions also reach Great Britain, Spain, France, China, Japan, Mexico and countries throughout South America. Tagged the "Olympics of martial arts fighting," the events pit two fighters from various disciplines in a full-contact, mixed martial arts competition. The UFC fighters are world-class athletes with a variety of backgrounds including, Olympic gold medal winners, former NCAA titleholders, international kickboxing and judo champions, and world-renowned black belt martial artists.
The UFC reports an untarnished record of safety in over 180 of its bouts. Governed by the Mixed Martial Arts Council (MMAC), whose President is Olympic gold medallist Jeff Blatnick, the sport is dedicated to establishing and enforcing rules that ensure the safety and sportsmanship of its participants. This fact has garnered UFC sanctioning by numerous state and international athletic associations.
