We recently had a chance to interview Darryl Lewis, Lead Producer of NBA Inside Drive 2000.
The interview will help us shed some light on Microsoft's second basketball game.
Briefly describe your role in the creation of NBA Drive 2000.
Although my official title is "program manager," my actual roles are project manager and primary game designer.
What encouraged Microsoft to decide to develop a basketball title?
Basketball is one of the most exciting and popular sport in America, but trails behind games such as Football and Soccer in terms of computer gaming popularity. We feel there's an opportunity to create a game that appeals to the large untapped group of sports enthusiasts and computer gamers out there who haven't been satisfied with the current crop of PC basketball games.
What will NBA Drive 2000 have that will persuade fans to purchase the game instead of NBA Live 2000?
Simply put, NBA Inside Drive 2000 looks, feels, and plays like real NBA basketball. The pace and intensity of the game is faithful to NBA basketball. Players move and react like real NBA basketball players. To be successful and win, you have to play real NBA basketball: work the ball into the post, use picks appropriately to get open take good shots, pass effectively, and play good defense. You can't just drive the lane and dunk or pound on the steal or block button and expect to stop the other team from scoring. For those who are new to basketball or just looking for a thrilling arcade-style basketball experience, we do have an arcade mode where you can run and gun, do fancy dunks, and drain the long-range jumper with ease. You still have to play good basic basketball to win a game; however, it's just easier to get into the game and enjoy it. Overall, we believe we've created a game that, in its first incarnation, beats the competition hands-down in terms of basketball gameplay. Finally, we have a great pricing story. NBA Inside Drive 2000 would be a tremendous value at any price, but at $20, it's an astounding value that basketball and sports fans simply won't be able to pass up and that also make it very enticing for all computer gamers.
How in-depth will the management side of NBA Inside Drive 2000 be?
NBA Inside Drive 2000 has very deep coaching options. We worked very closely with NBA coaches and players to determine what factors they adjust during a game. As a result, you can do things like adjust intensity and tempo on offense, set rebounding aggressiveness, and set team defensive pressure as well as how much pressure to put on the ballhandler and how you want to defend him. You can also specify how to defend in the post area and esoteric things such as how to deal with picks.
